Driver 5 has been revealed at E3 and is a return to roots for the series, but at the same time, it also has some shocking elements that may or may not go down well with the fans.

The game has been titled Driver: San Francisco and the focus is sensibly on the driving (it is called Driver after all) with no chance to stretch your legs at all this time around, though you can still switch your vehicles by making use of a bizarre new shifting ability, which allows you to teleport into them. This can be used strategically, allowing you to immediately jump into another car when you crash for instance. You’re also able to teleport into the body of others, allowing you to get some missions. There’s 8 player multiplayer and shifting is as much a part here as it is in the single player. All this oddness is seemingly to do with the main hero of the series, Tanner, being left in a coma after the events of Driver 3.

For the first time, cars are licensed and there is around 100 on offer to skid around the streets. The game is set in San Francisco, which with its hills and such is perfect car chase territory. It’s not accurately mapped, though all the landmarks are featured.

Driver: San Francisco is released this autumn on Xbox 360 and PS3. A Wii version is apparently to arrive in the future.
