As expected, Sony has announced the successor to the PSP. The handheld is currently going under the codename of NGP (which fittingly stands for Next Generation Portable) and has all the previously leaked features.

The new device has a touch screen on its face side and a multi-touch pad on its backside, motion sensing, dual analog sticks (yes, proper sticks as opposed to nubs), a large 5″ OLED screen, Wi-Fi, and is said to have near PS3 quality visuals, which all sounds rather pricey to me. The current look of the NGP (pictured below) is similar to that of the PSP.

Sony have already announced that first party properties such as the likes of Uncharted, Killzone, Everybody’s Golf, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance and WipEout will be coming to the handheld. Monster Hunter, Dynasty Warriors and Call of Duty have also been confirmed from third parties. Games and save data will be stored on flash cards, but said games will also be available to download from the PlayStation Store.

It’s all exciting stuff, and with Nintendo releasing the 3DS in March, it’ll be interesting to see this new handheld battle commence when the NGP is released in the autumn. For the tech heads out there, the full specifications of the NGP can be found below:
