Strong sales of the PS3 helped boost Sony to a $294 million profit for the second quarter of 2010. Although sales have declined in Japan and the United States, emerging markets such as Asia and South America have helped the entertainment division post higher operating profits.
With music sales outperforming movie takings, 5.1 million LCD TV’s and 2.4 million PS3’s took the company to an operating profit of 67 billion yen – in stark contrast to the loss of more than 25 billion in the same quarter of 2009.
Sony has upgraded its forecasts for the year ending March 2011, with a cautionary note that the strength of the yen will continue to hit profits. Cost-cutting has also helped the company improve, with Internet and 3D-equipped televisions looking to be a big seller for the rest of the year.
