Nintendo are jumping on the Skylanders bandwagon with their own line of figures.

amiibo figures, as they’re called, have special chips inside them which the Wii U’s GamePad is able to scan, allowing you to import their data to different games. As you play in such supported games, the figurine will develop its own unique stats.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, you’ll be able to fight against your amiibo, team up with it in battle or watch it battle other in-game characters. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the first game to support amiibo’s, and the first line of figures will be released along with that game. Nintendo are also promising future support in the likes of Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Yoshi’s Woolly World.

amiibo support will also be added to the 3DS in 2015 through the use of a special adapter.

The first series of amiibo figures will be released along Super Smash Bros. for Wii U later this year, and includes the likes of Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Link, Peach, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby and Animal Crossing’s Villager.
