Metroid is one of Nintendo’s flagship series’, and over the weekend it celebrated its milestone 25th anniversary.

The very first Metroid was released in 1986 on the NES, and it was followed by the very well received Super Metroid in 1994 on the SNES, which is famous for its much copied structure. The Metroid Prime series, which began life on the GameCube in 2002 and took the series into 3D and first person, was also very highly regarded.

There’s been 12 Metroid games since it was conceived, spanning systems such as the NES, SNES, GameCube, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, DS and Wii.

Most recently, we had last year’s Metroid: Other M on the Wii, which received a rather mixed reception. It certainly wasn’t Metroid playing to its greatest strengths, but it did give series heroine Samus Aaran a voice for the very first time, and lots of back story.

Happy birthday Metroid! It will be interesting to see where the series goes next.
