The biggest reveal for many would have been Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the first Zelda game specifically crafted for the Wii and due for release next year. It supports the often neglected motionPlus, allowing for a truer representation of sword fighting, whilst the nunchuk can be used to defend yourself with your shield. The visual style seems to have a brighter, more Windwaker-like direction than the fairly bland looking Twillight Princess.

Activisions’s GoldenEye remake was also officially announced, a trailer displayed the spruced up visuals and the addition of Daniel Craig’s Bond, replacing the previous 007, Pierce Brosnan, who featured in both the original N64 game and, of course, the film. Unsurprisingly it also offers online multiplayer, but thankfully the famous split-screen multiplayer from the original version has also been retained.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a 2D platformer, set to be released in the autumn. As usual, the titular Kirby can change form, becoming a parachute or a surfboard for instance and it’s all presented in an old fashioned but charming visual style.

Also announced was Mario Sports Mix, a game that just as the name suggests has Nintendo’s iconic, portly plumber and other supporting cast members, competing in a variety of sports, such as volleyball and ice hockey. It’s due for release next year.

Finally, developed by Retro Studios and expected for release around Christmas, Donkey Kong Country Returns is a 2D platformer that looks much the same as the 1996 SNES version, but should come as a delight to fans. There’s banana collecting, vine swinging, mine cart riding and jungles.
