The Godfather Blackhand Edition Wii Review

Publisher: Electronic Arts  Developer: Visceral Games  Genre: Action-Adventure  Players: 1

Age Rating: 18+  Other console/handheld formats: PS2, Xbox, PSPXbox 360, PS3

The Godfather was previously released on the PS2, Xbox and later the Xbox 360, where the game was gifted with some additional content. The Godfather has now arrived on the Wii, complete with an extended title that can only mean a further tweaking to the game. So then, are you happy now EA? Is this version finally to your satisfaction?

For the uninitiated, The Godfather is EA’s licensed take on the swelling sandbox genre and impressive it is too. The game takes place in a sizeable New York city environment, where you can steal and drive cars, shoot people or bash their heads in. This piece will focus on the fresh content, so if you want to know more about the game, head on over to our original review.

Being on the Wii, don’t expect too much from the graphics. This is definitely gameplay oriented.

Of course, with this being a Wii game, Blackhand Edition possesses the usual motion sensing that is to be expected from Nintendo‘s new toy, and we‘re happy to say that the controls are largely responsive and ridiculously good fun.

With the free aim mode using the remote, the already satisfactory shooting is even better, whilst the melee combat makes use of both the remote and nunchuck, each of which represents each of your hands. Finally the execution moves are even more gratifying, many of which require different gestures from one another, all are rather nasty and certainly not for the faint of heart.

The motion sensing, whilst perhaps the most standout aspect, is not the only feature that’s new to this edition. There’s a rather generous thirty new missions, ten new hit missions, new favours, new cars to drive, new weapons to ice your enemies with and more. All these additions are also accompanied by the new content that appeared in the 360 release, this essentially means that this is the third version of the game.

Graphically the game is decent enough and slightly superior to the Xbox and PS2 versions, although being on the Wii you won’t find the same graphical upgrades that are featured in the Xbox 360 and PS3 releases.

Unless you just can’t get enough of The Godfather or you view motion control (which works wonderfully well here it has to be said) as a crucial element, you should think twice before putting your cash down on the counter again if you already own this great game on another system. For everyone else Blackhand Edition is one of the best versions of the game to own.
